Hurricane Katrina Update 9-1-05

Hello Everyone,

Carola Hartley, the executive director of Nicholasville Now! is a Louisiana
native.  She is working with every Main Street director in the State of
Kentucky, the City of Nicholasville officials, Jessamine County officials,
civic leaders, and local residents to try to help provide some direct relief
to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  She has a direct contact in Baton
Rouge, La that will deliver goods directly to the victims.

Town Square Bank and Central Bank have set up a “Kentucky Katrina Relief”
account to be used to purchase items that are in need. Items that have been
requested include:  Men’s and women’s underwear, pre-mixed baby formula,
baby diapers, individual bottles of water, toilet paper, pet food, socks,
shoes, etc.

I have a couple of volunteers to drive a trailer loaded with the items to
Baton Rouge.  Other volunteers are needed to help aid these victims.  If you
know of a possible candidate(s) that are willing to help, please have them
contact the Nicholasville Now! office at 859-881-3820.  Carola is currently
working to establish a drop off point locally and state wide for goods to
delivered and picked up so that they can be transported to the areas in
need.

As always feel free to contact me at your convenience with any questions or
comments.

Sincerely,

Tommy Cobb, President

Update 9-2-05

Hello All,

This is just a follow up note to my email of yesterday. I have heard from a lot of you and I truly appreciate your thoughts and concerns.

I talked to several people in Louisiana last evening.  Let me just tell you that they need help!  My hometown of Opelousas, LA in St. Landry Parish is overrun with displaced people that need care and places to stay.  So far, there has been no help.  They are desperate and they need the following:  bottled water, premixed baby formula, underwear, sox, diapers and diaper whips, sheets, blankets, air mattresses, toilet paper and the like.  But especially water.  I talked to Mr. Don Menard who is the Parish (county) president.  He said he is desperate!

Opelousas is 160 miles northwest of New Orleans, and 60 miles west of Baton Rouge.  The area is fine.  They were not effected by the weather.  But, now there are all these people that have come there for help.  And, they are not equipped to handle the numbers of people who are there now. By all accounts, more will arrive in the next few days.  So, please help me to think about things we could do to help them.  I would appreciate that very much.

We are collecting the items to send to Louisiana now.  You can drop off items at McKechnie Vehicle Components, 601 John Watts Drive in Nicholasville (This is the first McKechnie building.  Please drive to the back of the building.), at Town Square Bank, Central Bank and Farmers Bank in Downtown Nicholasville as well as National City Bank, Jessamine Chamber of Commerce, and City Hall.
Tommy Cobb just informed me of the following:  Tony & Rita Hammond of Hammond Transportation and Roy Lamb of Lamb Trucking has been kind enough to provide the trailer and transport goods/supplies once a trailer is full.

We also have received a call from a trucking company out of Georgetown.  They are loading a truck now and will drive it down to Louisiana on Sunday.  Ms. Calisa Carpenter, who owns a child care center in Nicholasville called A Child's Place, has donated $1,000.00 that she will use to purchas goods to help fill the rest of that truck.

Also, there is a desperate need for blood in the entire Gulf Coast region.   So, if you can donate blood, please contact your local blood bank and tell them you want to donate blood for the Katrina victims.

We also will be needing volunteers to help us this weekend with collection of goods.  If you can help this weekend, please contact me asap.

Please call me or email me if you have any questions or need more information. Thank you so much and God Bless.
